Service charges: the same 1,299 menu price, and why one guest pays 1,299 while another pays 1,429

Macau sauna menus write the service charge four different ways: "included", "10%", "5% + 5%", and a few that do not say at all. This page works each method out and lists the rate for all 14 venues — two minutes before you settle up saves more than you would think.

Cost

The short version: three sentences

1. "Included" means the board price is the final price. Nothing to calculate.

2. "10%" means the menu price × 1.1. A 1,299 room costs 1,429.

3. "5% + 5%" is the one people misread. It is not 5%: it is two separate 5% items, about 10.25% in total — slightly more than a flat 10%.

Three bills first, then the percentage

The service charge is calculated onTherapist package, not on the whole bill — the structure has three layers:

ItemWhat it coversHow it is charged
Ticket
entry pass
Baths, steam and dry sauna, lounge, unlimited free food and drink, plusone free lobby massage. Ticket only, no therapist, is allowed. Varies by venue; paid on entry
Therapist package Priced bynationalityandtier — within one venue it can differ several times over.At most venues the package includes entry。 Package price × (1 + service rate)
Add-ons Themed rooms, couples, extra time — added on site. Quoted per item; ask first
So ask two questions:“Does it include entry?”and“What is the final total?”. Ask only “how much” and you will often get a number with neither the service charge nor the ticket in it.

Four methods, worked out

The table runs four common menu prices (1,299 / 1,598 / 2,188 / 2,888) through all four methods. Compare it directly with the menu in front of you.

What you actually pay under each method (MOP)
Menu priceIncluded10%5% + 5%Biggest spread
1,2991,2991,429about 1,432+133
1,5981,5981,758about 1,762+164
2,1882,1882,407about 2,413+225
2,8882,8883,177about 3,184+296

"5% + 5%" is calculated as two successive charges (menu price × 1.05 × 1.05). If the venue applies both to the original price the result equals 10%, a difference of a few patacas — but you should know which way they calculate it.

The easiest thing to get wrong:Most menu numbers exclude the service charge. So when you ask for a price, ask "how much do I actually pay at checkout" rather than "how much is it" — whether their number includes the service charge is worth several hundred patacas.

Beyond the service charge: three common add-ons

First, small services.Scrubs, ear cleaning and foot massage are usually charged separately, from a few tens to a couple of hundred. If you do not want them, say so plainly — nobody insists.

Second, room-type or couples supplements.Themed rooms and two-person arrangements usually carry a supplement. How much depends on the room and the night — ask before deciding.

Third, weekends and peak hours.Friday and Saturday nights fill the popular venues, tightening both prices and room choice. Move to a weekday if you can — the same venue feels very different.

Four questions before you pay

Separate the menu price from the amount you pay. If the answer is "not included", ask for the percentage; if it is "included", the board number is final.
For the "5% + 5%" venues. Ask what each item is and what it is calculated on, and checkout holds no surprises.
The most useful sentence of all. Ask for one total, not a list of unit prices — if the total does not match, you can raise it on the spot.
Cleaning fees, room fees and per-head charges are extra at some venues. Ask once on the way in rather than argue at checkout.

Cash or card?

Most venues take both, but cards (and e-wallets) usually cost 1.5–3.5% in FX or fees. Paying in patacas cash is cheapest — on a large bill that gap pays for another add-on.

Best practice: confirm the total inside first, then withdraw or change money. Do not discover a cash shortfall at the counter.
